Lesley J. Lewis

Lesley has over a decade of experience in environmental consultancy. The founder member of Limosa Environmental, Lesley has project-managed a wide range of ecological assessments including those for Environmental Impact Assessments and Appropriate Assessment, and for waste and IPCC licence applications.

A portion of Lesley’s work has involved providing expertise in conservation and biodiversity matters.  Lesley has been listed on the Environmental Scientist Panel of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (DoEHLG) for over a decade and has worked on projects such as SAC/SPA management plans and the 2004/05 and 2008/09 SPA Boundary Review Programme.  She is currently contracted by NPWS (through BirdWatch Ireland) as a Waterbird Ecologist to the National Parks & Wildlife Service.  Within this work she has been responsible for the design and implementation of survey methodology for the NPWS baseline low tide survey programme and is working on the development of Conservation Objectives for coastal Special Protection Areas.

In 2006, Lesley was contracted by the Heritage Council to draft Biodiversity Action Plans for Cork County Council and Cork City Council.  Both plans have now been published and are available on the respective county council websites.

Lesley has been a part-time lecturer at University College Cork for the past eight years and lectures to B.Sc and M.Sc students on subjects including estuarine and waterbird ecology, Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) and the formulation of conservation objectives and targets.  She presented a paper at the December 2009 conference ‘Delivering Appropriate Assessment in Ireland: Meeting the challenges of Article 6 of the Habitats Directive.’  The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DoEHLG) guidance on Appropriate Assessment was launched at this meeting.

Lesley’s specialist knowledge and on-going research interests include avian ecology, intertidal and shorebird ecology with particular experience in the area of ecosystem impacts of coastal developments.  She has contributed to several scientific publications including books and has several papers published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Lesley is a full member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.  She is also a member and voluntary surveyor for Birdwatch Ireland (e.g. I-WeBs, NEWS, Bird Atlas, CBS) and the British Trust for Ornithology amongst others.  As a member of the International Wader Study Group, Lesley was the organiser of the 2005 annual conference held in Co Cork, Ireland.
